This is a rare antique saphiret brooch from the late Victorian or Edwardian period
Central saphiret which is surrounded by square saphiret rhinestones, with small paste rhinestones on the very edge of this piece of antique jewellery
This antique brooch is approximately 25 mm (1 2/16 inch) across set into a brass setting with a long pin
Condition - has all the original prong set rhinestones.
Patination seen lightly on the brass setting.
The saphirets are faceted with minor surface scratches seen under a lens. One of the square saphirets is marked.
Tiny spots noted in the square rhinestones which may be due to foil loss underneath - see photographs which enlarge
Saphiret is produced when gold is added to blue glass, this gives the stones a characteristic look of mocha/coffee/pink/mauve colour that shines a blue iridescence in the light.
Most likely from Czechoslovakia and made in the Victorian era until the 1900s when gold became too expensive to use in antique jewellery production.
